I have always been drawn to unusual gemstones, and Hypersthene is certainly among the most intriguing I have worked with. Its dark surface conceals a beautiful iridescence that appears only when the stone catches the light, producing soft reflections in shades of silver, bronze and smoky grey. This optical effect, known as ‘schiller’, gives Hypersthene an almost metallic appearance and a depth that I find incredibly captivating.
Hypersthene is considered by many to be a stone of grounding, inner strength and confidence. Its name derives from the Greek words ‘hyper’ and ‘sthenos’, meaning “great strength”.
When I discovered this remarkable cabochon, I immediately knew it deserved to become part of my One of One collection. The One of One series allows me to work around exceptional gemstones and create designs that are unlikely to ever be repeated in exactly the same form.
For this ring, I wanted the Hypersthene to remain the focal point. The elongated shield-shaped cabochon is framed by a delicate beaded setting and crowned by an ornamental claw, while the triple-shank band is decorated with small butterfly motifs.
The inside of the band is engraved with the words Ad Astra, Latin for “to the stars”, a small hidden detail that seemed particularly fitting for a gemstone whose metallic flashes evoke distant galaxies and a night sky illuminated by moonlight.
Measuring approximately 5.8 cm in length, this is undoubtedly a statement ring, yet its well-balanced proportions ensure it remains comfortable and easy to wear.
This particular piece has already found a home, but I was fortunate enough to acquire another beautiful Hypersthene, in a large oval cut. I am already looking forward to creating another One of One ring around this captivating gemstone and seeing where the carving process leads me.
As with all One of One creations, once a piece has been sold, it will never be reproduced in exactly the same way again.
