Bringing Your Ideas to Life – Bespoke Jewellery

One of the most rewarding aspects of being an independent jeweller is having the opportunity to create pieces that exist nowhere else in the world.

Over the years, I have made jewellery inspired by many different stories and passions. Some commissions have celebrated anniversaries and weddings, others have incorporated family crests, meaningful symbols, favourite animals, spiritual imagery or memories of loved ones. I have carved Pegasuses, protective talismans, ornate signet rings, Hamsas, keys, skulls and pieces inspired by mythology, literature and art. Every commission is unique because every client brings something different to the bench.

People often ask me how a bespoke commission begins. In reality, it usually starts with a simple conversation. Sometimes a client already knows exactly what they would like and sends sketches or reference images. Others only have a vague idea or a feeling they would like a piece to evoke, and we gradually develop the design together.

Once I have enough information, I can usually provide an estimated quotation. Bespoke work takes considerably more time than my made-to-order collections, as every commission is developed and carved entirely from scratch. Pricing depends on the complexity of the design, the amount of carving involved, gemstones, and the ever-changing cost of precious metals. My minimum bespoke charge is £300, and quotations remain valid for three weeks due to fluctuations in silver prices.

Unlike many contemporary jewellers, I do not use CAD software. Every commission begins life as a block of carving wax, which is sculpted by hand until the design slowly emerges. I have always loved this part of the process. It feels much closer to sculpture than traditional jewellery making and allows me to create pieces with a more organic and expressive character.

Clients are kept updated throughout the making process and I normally send photographs of the wax carving before casting, followed by images of the finished piece once it has been polished and gemstones have been set. There is something quite magical about watching an idea transform from a sketch into a wearable object.

Most commissions are completed within approximately three to four weeks, although during busy periods production may take a little longer. I prefer not to rush bespoke work, as I believe these pieces should be made with the same care and attention that inspired them in the first place.

The image above shows just a few examples of past commissions. On the left is a commemorative cuff celebrating a client’s profession, in the centre a winged pendant inspired by spiritual imagery and symbolism, and on the right a decorative Hamsa pendant created as a protective talisman. They are all completely different from one another, which perhaps says more about bespoke work than anything else I could write.

If you have an idea for a piece of jewellery that you would like to bring to life, whether fully formed or simply a thought waiting to be explored, I would be delighted to hear from you.

I have also prepared a small bespoke commission guide offering a glimpse into the journey from concept to finished piece, together with indicative pricing and production times. Bespoke Quotation
