Renaissance Memento Mori Skull Ring ~ A Bespoke Commission

For centuries, skulls have appeared in art, jewellery and sculpture as reminders of life’s fleeting nature. During the Renaissance, the tradition of Memento Mori, Latin for “remember that you must die”, became a prominent theme among artists, philosophers and collectors. Rather than being viewed as something dark or morbid, these symbols served as a reminder to live fully, appreciate the present moment and focus on what truly matters.

This bespoke skull ring was inspired by those historic Renaissance Memento Mori artworks and the detailed Vanitas Paintings of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

At its centre sits a sculptural skull carved in low relief, reminiscent of the hand-engraved motifs found on antique signet rings and personal talismans. Emerging from the eye sockets and surrounding the skull are twisting worms, another traditional Memento Mori symbol representing the cycle of life, death and renewal.

The shoulders of the ring feature crossed bones, framing the central design and reinforcing its historical character. Hidden within the details are deeply engraved symbols of a scythe and shovel, references to mortality, labour, time and the inevitable passage of life. Together, these elements create a piece that feels both ancient and timeless.

Unlike modern skull jewellery, which often focuses on rebellion or aggression, Renaissance skull imagery was deeply philosophical. These objects encouraged reflection and served as personal reminders that life is precious because it is temporary.

The creation of a bespoke piece often starts with a spark of inspiration.

Some clients arrive with a fully formed idea, while others bring a collection of reference images, historical inspirations or meaningful symbols they would like incorporated into a piece. Together we develop the concept, discussing the imagery, proportions and details before moving into the design stage. Once the direction is established, I refine the composition until the design feels balanced and personal to the client. The piece is then hand-carved in wax using traditional techniques, allowing every detail to be sculpted by hand before casting.

After the carving is completed, the model is cast in silver using the ancient lost-wax casting process. The piece is then finished, polished and oxidised to highlight the depth of the relief and bring the details to life.

The finished piece becomes more than jewellery; it becomes a personal object rich in symbolism, craftsmanship and meaning.

One of the things I enjoy most about bespoke work is the opportunity to create jewellery with personal significance.

Whether it is inspired by a family memory, a historical period, a favourite symbol, a special occasion, or a lifelong fascination with a particular theme, bespoke jewellery allows those stories to be transformed into something tangible and lasting that will be passed down through generations.

Many of my clients are collectors looking for a truly unique piece that cannot be found elsewhere. Others are seeking a personal talisman or a meaningful object that reflects a chapter of their life.

If you have an idea for a bespoke commission or simply the beginnings of one, I would be delighted to hear from you.

Please get in touch to discuss your project, and together we can create something entirely unique.
